In a surprising turn of events, just hours after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation from both his party and the prime minister`s position, Donald Trump, the newly elected U.S. president, has raised eyebrows by repeating his desire to make Canada the 51st state of the United States.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Monday, Trump shared his thoughts on the matter.
He said, “Many people in Canada want to join us as the 51st state. The U.S. will no longer carry the huge trade deficit and the burden of subsidies that Canada currently needs. Trudeau knew that, and that’s why he resigned. If Canada becomes part of the U.S., there will be no tariffs, taxes will be much lower, and they will be fully safe from threats like Russian and Chinese ships. Together, it would be a fantastic nation!!!”
Trump had hinted at this idea before, even as recently as last month. He made a similar statement on Truth Social, asking,
“Why do we give Canada more than $100 million in subsidies every year? A lot of Canadians actually want to be part of the U.S. This would save tons of money in taxes and defense. I think it’s a great idea. The 51st state!!!”
This isn’t the first time Trump has voiced such a proposal.
Previously, he had even threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, accusing the Canadian government of not doing enough to solve trade and immigration problems.
